  • The last post to Alex, from our dear friend, leaves me a bit saddened. Here's another lesson I drive really hard in my "Industrial Decisions Models" course at the University:
The quality of a decision is based upon the information you have available to you at the time and the logic of your model. It is never determined by the outcome.

That is to say, just because things turn out badly does not mean you made a bad decision. Just as true, because things turn out well does not mean your decision was good.

As I look back at life, there are many things I may have wished to change. But I am cannot think of a single significant thing that I would have decided differently, given my conditions at the time, my values, and my perceptions of reality and opportunity. The "what-ifs" are speculative fancy and sometimes fun to engage, but are far removed from materiality. Even in my best dreams, would my career, marriage, children, financial condition, religion, etc. have been different had I chosen differently? Of course, but would they be better? I don't know.

For example, I really wanted to go to the Air Force Academy (yeah, I had that alt appointment one year before the West Point story I already told). I wanted to fly the F4 over VietNam. It could have led to a glorious, regular military, career. Or it could have gotten me shot down and killed, or worse yet, shot down, imprisoned and turned me into a "John McCain". It sure would have been different, and the outcome is always beyond my control.

Do I want to live my life over? Only in my dreams!

  • Fisty Followup:
I've been asking Iron Fist this simple question:

As a convicted felon (for a gun crime), how come you own/collect guns?

Now I have a followup question.

Iron Fist posted this a while back:

    #27 Iron Fist 1/24/2003 9:45:04 PM
I started to go into a long spiel about a time when I shot a ********** (in the leg)...

So, Mr Iron Fist, you shot this other guy after you killed your buddy? What happened? Was it okay with the cops? How many people have you shot, just these two?
