Congress to Discuss Schiavo Bill

Congress to Discuss Schiavo Bill

Legislation seeks to put in place a system to save the life of the disabled Florida woman.

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to consider legislation this week that would save Terri Schiavo's life by granting the disabled Florida woman the same right to due process as criminals.

Passage will have to happen quickly, though, if Schiavo is to be spared from the court-ordered starvation and dehydration scheduled to commence on March 18.

Ken Connor, chairman of the Center for a Just Society, is one of the authors of the Disabled Person's Legal Protection Act, which is scheduled to be introduced this week in the House.

"Terri Schiavo, the person whose life literally hangs in the balance in all of these judicial proceedings, has never been afforded independent counsel or effective representation," Connor explained. "This bill, if passed, would guarantee that she receives legal counsel and effective representation."
