Nice to Know Doc's.... An offer to the Schiavo Team???

CSI MEDBLOGS: DOES TERRI SCHIAVO HAVE HYDROCEPHALUS?


I have offered the following proposition to Terri Schiavo's legal team today:

The single CT image I was able to access at the U of Miami's web sight raises the following ESSENTIAL questions/issues:

Issue: There is something in Terri's right ventricle (the image is reversed). I know she had thalamic implants, but on this one slice the "thing" in Terri's ventricle is not projected to the thalamus, it is projected within the ventricle. She needs a follow-up scan to see what this is and where it is

Issue: If the "thing" in Terri's ventricle is a "shunt tip" -- who put it there and why is it there and was it removed? If she was shunted to relieve hydrocephalus then she must have follow-up exams and someone needs to postulate the most common mechanisms for hydrocephalus (which, I believe, is blood in the cranial vault)

    Judge Greer did not rule on the state's request immediately, but he granted a request from Ms. Schiavo's husband, Michael, to bar the state's Department of Children and Families from taking custody of her, from removing her from the hospice where she has gone six days without her feeding tube and from providing her with nutrition or hydration.

    George Felos, the lawyer for Michael Schiavo, who had sought to end life support for his brain-damaged wife, said he had heard "credible" rumors that state officials planned to send doctors to the hospice to give Ms. Schiavo intravenous fluids.

    Judge Greer also directed state sheriffs to take whatever actions were necessary to enforce the order, which came toward the end of another breathlessly paced day in the case.

    Being a student of criminal justice..slightly generic...this SCREAMS criminal misconduct from the day Terri had what I like to call.."her accident"....don't jump on me for that I'm trying to illustrate that I think he tried to kill her that day and has been trying to do so since then.....

    Possible problem.....it happened 15 yrs ago prior to any kind of good domestic violence laws....and besides what her family says and the DA is going to look for compelling evidence prior to the actual incident.....and then the statute of limitations may come into play ...blah blah legal jargon...

  • texanista, do have the info about the wrong scan - Boyle would appreciate the info. He is working with a posted CT on a Univ of Miami Ethics web that states it’s Terri’s CT. In the post Sherri shared yesterday, Boyle covered the CT provided and had numerous findings and questions – one being “Is this Terri’s CT” and later asked if this wasn’t Terri’s CT, where is it. His post ended with the statement, “If this is Terri’s CT of the brain, something may be very wrong.” Thanks

    From what I looked up today and the differnt things i read this is what I would look into...

    Guardianship care plan..not filed...buh bye ward of the state...

    Neglect for not letting her receive even the basic range of motion physical therapy....

    a sane person would think that in and of itself would basically hand her over to the state...

    Because of allegations made by some nurses I would start looking into that....ummmm..only thing I can think of comparing this to is the black widow murder chick....the last one didn't die and she was poisening him over a period of time....if i'm remeber correctly....and POOF attempted murder ....

    ok obvisouly you guys are on your game...this is just one of my fyi's i give to ppl because you always hear ppl crying about how they are guilty before proven innocent...cry me a river...blah blah...it's the media that does that....the burden is on the prosecution to prove beyond a resonable doubt that whatever happened happened....
    and I was going to say something about intent with that but being that I only got 90 mins of sleep last night I'm losing my train of thought.....

  • I heard something about possibly sending the feds in.....there has got to be some loop hole....it gets federal funds does it not...wonder if they could use that money someone said something about ealier what was it $14 million or something as a reason be a bit transparent but it would get the job done....when I worked at a nursing home before I got married we were under constant threat of the state coming in cause that place was literally a warehouse....had to quit....to bad that was the very same place my grandma was and what i suspect didnt help....

    you have some nurses saying yes she responded to me and others saying no....

    you have her parents saying she is responding with VIDEO....and Micheal saying no.....

    Wonder if she responds to strangers she feels comfortable around...you ever get that feeling when someone walks in the room and your either like they seem ok or you just know to stay away....and out of personal experiance and no offense to anyone that's an a nurse here....but just cause youre a nurse doesnt mean you have the caring mentality you know...after all micheal is an RN....

    Obvisouly micheal is going to say she doesn't respond ...but when my husband and I were talking about it maybe she doesn't respond to him cause ummmm he abuses her....

    Question: if all of this abuse was going on .. why were the Schindlers and Michael Schiavo so close for the next 4 years after her heart attack? If she was being abused, wouldn't they have suspected (as you all so clearly state that they have) and why would they have been so kind to him after her accident??

    I've lost count .. what is LGF?

    Regarding the Wolfson report .. I found that from some link also while perusing Technorati. I don't have the link anymore because the file is a pdf download.     MSM is the acronym given (usually in a derogatory context) to the Main Stream Media. Usually used when the poster perceives biased action and/or consipiracy theories.

    LGF is the acronym given to littlegreenfootballs.com. Some of the regular readers on here have vowed never to return to the otherwise conservative site because it wasn't giving Terri's story coverage (until Wed nite)

    As far as investigative ability, I think many blog commenters (both left and right) overestimate their internet cunning. I think texanista eventually scaled back his claim about you

  • I can only speculate as to why the Schindlers remained close to Michael. My sister was in a bad marriage with a very handsome, suave, charming man who had us all fooled for a while. Even after my sister started suspecting him of cheating, and even after we all became concerned because he wasn't working (none of the jobs he was offered were ever good enough for him, you see...) my parents still tried to be nice to him, bought him a computer, helped pay his tuition, etc.

    Most parents try to love their sons- and daughters-in-law, I think, and it's often hard for them to break the bond. Maybe harder, perhaps, because they don't get to see the bad marriage from the inside.

    I count myself extremely lucky that my ex-brother-in-law just left, instead of becoming physically abusive.

    Just my personal opinion, for what it's worth.

    no i haven't. what i have read, however, is extensive legal analysis of all the documents in this matter ... one of which was the PDF file that I posted which was a report by a Guardian Ad Litem that was appointed by the Chief Judge to prepare a report for Jeb Bush.

    seems pretty clear and convincing that all of the supposed "allegations" have surfaced later.

    interesting ... i posted here earlier yesterday that i thought her bone traumas could be related to the fact that she was bulemic, severely lacking nutrition, and had fragile bones at this point.

    i was reading earlier tonight before i tried to go to sleep on a website which is maintained by an 11th Circuit Appellate Attorney about the Schiavo case. he has NO ties to either side. he is completely neutral but has posted clear factual information.

    i found it interesting that he says on a FAQ page (he compiled information regarding questions he is asked over and over):

    But isn't there a bone scan that shows Terri was beaten?

    I honestly don't know. What I understand is that a bone scan was taken in 1991 and that the doctor who read it saw on it evidence of past trauma at various places on Terri's body. Some consider that evidence of a severe beating by her husband, others consider it evidence consistent with bulimia, a fall, and CPR by paramedics. Whether trauma really happened, or what kind, or when, are all unclear.

    The bone scan was not raised in the original trial regarding Terri's wishes. The issue was raised by the Schindlers in a November 2002 emergency motion.

    i wonder why that is? if they TRULY suspected this, why wasn't it raised in the original trial? because it was "created" later as an attempt to discredit Michael?

    he further states:

    I've heard Michael beat or strangled her nearly to death and that he wants her to die to cover up his abuse. What really happened?

    I do not know this family and will not comment on whether any abuse occurred. I can, however, look to the case's history and point out some items that might be relevant to anyone considering this issue.

    First, "Terri's Law" required the chief judge of the local circuit court to appoint a guardian ad litem (GAL) to examine Terri's case and advise the Governor. The chief judge appointed Dr. Jay Wolfson from the University of South Florida. Dr. Wolfson's December 2003 report to Governor Bush included this bit of factual history:

    The cause of the cardiac arrest was adduced to a dramatically reduced potassium level in Theresa's body. Sodium and potassium maintain a vital, chemical balance in the human body that helps define the electrolyte levels. The cause of the imbalance was not clearly identified, but may be linked, in theory, to her drinking 10-15 glasses of iced tea each day. While no formal proof emerged, the medical records note that the combination of [Theresa's] aggressive weight loss, diet control and excessive hydration raised questions about Theresa from Bulimia, an eating disorder, more common among women than men, in which purging through vomiting, laxatives and other methods of diet control become obsessive.

    Also relevant to questions about the cause of Terri's collapse is the lawsuit that Michael brought on Terri's behalf against Terri's doctors. The premise of that early 1990s lawsuit was that the doctors committed malpractice by failing to diagnose Terri's bulimia and that her bulimia led to her cardiac arrest. The case was tried to a jury, which ruled in Michael's favor, finding that Terri had bulimia, that her bulimia caused her cardiac arrest, and that the doctors were negligent in failing to diagnose the situation. The verdict was appealed, and before the appellate court could rule, the parties settled, with Michael recovering approximately $750,000 for Terri and $300,000 for himself.

    After this case gained national attention in 2003, Gary Fox, the lawyer who represented Terri and Michael in that suit, wrote a stirring column concerning Terri's bulimia and how the tragic effects of that disease have been lost in the hoopla surrounding this case.     The significance of the medical malpractice lawsuit can be seen in a few ways. A jury agreed that bulimia caused Terri's collapse. The defendants were her doctors -- one might think that they, of all people, would have been able to show that Terri had been beaten or strangled if that was what had occurred. Also, to believe that Michael caused Terri's collapse by beating her is to believe that Michael initiated a lawsuit against someone else for causing her collapse, opening the whole matter to serious inquiry and greatly increasing the risk that someone would discover his role.

    Finally, I am not aware that anyone -- not the paramedics, doctors, nurses, family members, friends, or anyone else -- who saw Terri in the hours, weeks, and months after her collapse ever suggested at the time that Terri had been beaten or strangled.

    As I said above, I am not commenting on whether any abuse actually occurred. I don't know.

    The sad part is here in this blog, everyone talks about research and information, etc. But it seems that you only look for the propaganda type of information ... not information from neutral third partys who a) have no interest in the case and b) do not side with either party.

    Frankly, I'm more apt to believe those folks than all of tthese allegations that continue to be thrown around by what I believe to be well-meaning individuals, but who are sorely misinformed.

    My original purpose for ever posting on this site was to try and get the zealots to "look at the other side of the beach ball" ... but it's impossible. You walk through life with blinders on, you jump on a band wagon cause and ride that horse to death. It is compelely tragic that you *hear* something and it spreads like wildfire ... without regard for who's life you may be trashing.

    You refuse to see anything OTHER than what you believe .. .what you are certain of . what you have heard ... but the fact remains that NONE of you were there ... the fact remains that for some reason .. the Schindlers allowed Michael to live with them for 4 years while taking care of Terri .. that if there was some kind of abuse going on prior to that .. they would have known but didn't bring it up until years later ...

    I think the very sad fact is that the Schindlers are heartbroken for the loss of their daughter and need someone to blame. They want to lash out ... they want to scream and cry ... they want to make others feel the pain that they are feeling .. which are all normal reactions to grief.

    I have a question ... let's say that by some miraculous intervention, Terri was allowed to begin receiving nutrition. And lets say that she was stabilized and given further medical examinations (the MRI and PET and whatever else you all are screaming for) ... and the results are the SAME .. much if not most of her cerebral cortex (the portion of the brain that controls conscious thought, among other things) was literally gone, replaced by spinal fluid. she doesn't have a brain. it's gone.

    All the allegations that she reacts to stimuli ... are proven false. That is really is just brain stem activity because the Schindlers have never been able to consistently show that Terri responds in any kind of cohesive manner.

    So then what? What would you have happen then? For her to literally remain like that for another 20 years?

    See .. it's a no-win situation here.

    All of this being said ... I'm done posting here. I have never considered myself right or left .. but merely someone who believes in certain things. My attempts to bring in neutral information has failed ... as I have been nothing short of harassed, ridiculed, taunted, laughed at, called a liar, called a killer, etc.

    If this is how Christian's act ... I never want to be one.
